Polycarbonate vs acrylic: which is better for greenhouse panel?

We provide both polycarbonate and acrylic options; however, we are often asked which is more suitable for greenhouse glass panels.

The short answer is that we recommend polycarbonate, as it is weather- and smash-proof and offers UV protection while in the greenhouse. However, it cannot be polished on the sides.

Polycarbonate Greenhouse Sheeting:

  • More prone to scratching than clear Perspex® acrylic but can be easily buffed to look brand new.

Clear Acrylic Greenhouse Sheeting (Perspex®):

  • Up to 20 times stronger than glass and highly weather-resistant.
  • Can withstand temperatures from -20°C in winter to +30°C in summer, with a temperature variation resistance of 50°C.
  • Exceptionally clear with 92% transparency and no color bias.
  • Available in thicknesses from 2-30 mm, cut to size.
  • Half sheets measure 1520 mm x 2050 mm or 3050 mm x 1020 mm.
  • Full transparent acrylic panel measures 3050 mm x 2050 mm.

Why doesn’t Me and My Glass recommend actual glass for greenhouse panels?

There are several reasons why we don’t recommend or sell traditional glass for greenhouse panels. The glass typically used for greenhouses is called horticultural glass, which is very thin and not toughened. This can cause issues during delivery. Even if the glass arrives intact, it may not last long. Heavy rain and high winds can cause panels to shift and fall, and a single fall can easily break traditional greenhouse glass.

We can provide toughened glass, but it comes at a higher cost, and you still run the risk that it could smash if it falls, due to the increased weight and impact. Additionally, many people seek replacement greenhouse glass because it has already broken. Therefore, for fewer breakages, greater cost savings, and less time spent on replacements, polycarbonate and acrylic are stronger and longer-lasting options.
