Shower Glass Thickness: 6mm, 8mm or 10mm?

Choosing the Right Glass Thickness for Your Shower Screen

If you’re considering a new shower screen, you’ll want to know the ideal thickness before placing your order. It’s always a good idea to consult with a glass expert before making a decision. There are many different types of glass and varying thicknesses, so it’s important to specify the intended use of the glass. For example, glass used for shower screens is different from glass used in wood burners.

Below is an overview of the types of glass and recommended thicknesses for shower screens.

Shower Screen Glass Thickness

In the UK, USA, and other countries, shower screen glass must be toughened or tempered. The glass undergoes a toughening process that makes it more durable. Most glass products, such as table tops and shelves, are toughened. In North America, the term “tempered” is used interchangeably with “toughened.”

Shower glass is always toughened or tempered. Ready-made shower screen kits can have glass as thin as 5mm. However, larger pieces of glass (in the range of 4mm-6mm) can be unstable and may wobble when handled. This can be dangerous during installation.

Most chain DIY stores and online bathroom suppliers typically use 6mm glass for shower screens. While this meets minimum shower thickness standards, it’s not something we recommend.

We suggest opting for 8mm or 10mm glass thickness, as these are much more durable than 6mm. While 6mm glass is suitable for table tops and is toughened, we wouldn’t recommend using it for shower screens.

8mm and 10mm glass provide a sturdier, more solid feel, especially for larger pieces, and are less likely to wobble. These thicker options also offer a wider range of compatible fixtures. Shower screen hardware, such as U-channels and hinges, is more versatile with 8mm and 10mm glass thicknesses.
