Glass Expansion and Contractions

Does Glass Expand and Contract?

In regard to this question, it’s generally not something to be overly concerned about.

Expansion and distortion can occur when exposed to heat and moisture, but the degree of change depends on various factors, including the size, thickness, and type of glass used.

As a general rule, we always advise leaving a 2-3mm tolerance around all edges when measuring for glass in the home. This tolerance accounts for any potential expansion, particularly with splashbacks. More importantly, in new-build properties, it allows for natural settling of the house. New builds can take up to 12 months to fully settle, which can also affect the glass.

By sticking to a 2-3mm tolerance, you can avoid most concerns.

The problem usually comes when people want everything to fit perfectly, with no gaps. However, this can lead to issues later on, as things like house movement or natural expansion can cause the glass to crack over time — sometimes as much as 6+ months down the line.
