At Me and My Glass, we know that when it comes to glass, there are many technical details, properties and aspects. So when there are questions from customers, we always happy to help. Something that regularly comes up is asking about the difference between float and low iron glass.

There are two main types of glass that can be toughened. Float glass & low iron glass. We take a look at the details regarding both of these types of glass.

As you can see from the image above, float glass has the slight green featured. This type of glass is used for clear glass, so for example clear shelves, shower screen etc. The reason why the tint is featured, is there are several elements such as oxide, sand and more in the glass. In the majority of times, this type of glass doesn’t get painted as the colour will be affected due to the green tint. The only colour you can paint on float is black as this is not affected at all. Clear float is the cheapest glass on the market, it’s a standard material used in everything basically, its what they use to make mirrors also. Float glass is manufactured from the same “FLOAT GLASS” material. Float glass has a natural Green tint in its body (iron minerals within the glass are Green). This is only usually visible from the edge of the glass if this is exposed or visible. If the glass was encased in a frame for example you probably would not notice its natural Green body tone . It has always been manufactured in the same way and has visual quality.

Thicknesses available for float glass is 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm & 12mm.

Whereas with low iron glass, the glass has the lowest green tint featured. Once this type of glass is painted the colour isn’t affected. Low iron is popular and is used for splashbacks. If you painted float and low iron glass, you will be able to see the difference in the colour. For example, paint a piece of low-iron glass white and it will show white from its face. Paint a piece of standard float white and it will look apple white from its face.

Our clear glass splashbacks are made from Low Iron Glass. We can do one in Float glass if required.

Thicknesses available for low iron glass is 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm.
